i bought a very abused 79 f-250 last winter to make a mud truck. it has a 460 (from a junk yard) in it. it needed heads, so i put a set of rebuilt dove-c heads from a 70 429 on it.the carb was nasty, so i put a rebuild kit in it and it's ok, not the best it could be, especially on an incline. i intended to build the 70 429 block to a 460 and get a new intake, cam, carb, and rebuild the transmission. turned out the dana 44 kept breaking at the bogs, so i found a dana 60 and swapped them out. no more breaking axles and spiders. that soaked up all my funds and i never done the motor and transmission. i stripped everything off the truck that i could. i made a snorkel with the air filter inside the cab. cut the rear drums and break assembly off the rear along with the rear shock brackets. the drum breaks kept packing with mud and caused unbelievable amount of drag. lifted the front with some rear leafs i bought from a junk yard and made drop brackets for a total of around 7" of lift. then i bought a new set of bogger tires, 38.5x11 in the front and 38.5x15 in the rear. the short drag link caused terrible bump steer, so i made cross over steer for it. steering still would bind up with front locked in. a couple weeks ago i drilled and tapped the gear box for hydro assist. when i get a cylinder mounted on the axle it should steer better. it has a fuel cell from an outboard boat motor (red plastic), wouldn't hold enough fuel for a trail. the front and rear are welded (spiders).
it don't have a bed but i have one from a later model i could use. i am looking at either building the 70 429 block or just getting a intake, cam, carb on the junk yard 460. i'm thinking for a trail rig i really wouldn't want a big heavy motor and definately some rear breaks. i would have to replace the proportioning valve and try to do disc breaks on the rear or something, because the rear drums was a one piece deal. so there is no going back with it. i think i have some good parts (79 f-250 dana 44 mini spooled w/flat tops and dana 60 rear) that i could use on a small suv and it would be easier than changing my mud truck and i would have two vehicles that could share the same tires. i could also take my daughters with me in a suv. i don't have a garage to work in right now so all work has haulted. i'll try to get some pics. i'm not very computer smart.

I sell disc brake kits for $315 shipped. It's completely bolt on and everything you need. I use the right size caliper that you don't need a new porportioning valve also.

how do you determine the sizes of calipers needed? if i done it i was going to just use a set of the double piston ones from my donor f-250 front. i don't know how this would work or if i ever get to try it. the kit you have would be nice but i have to try the free way first. that would take money from something else. could i drill the holes for the lug bolts bigger and use rotors from a 01 excursion. i have two of those.

It's determined from volume of fluid required to make it move. I definately understand cheap first, but those calipers are too big. I use chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 front calipers in my kit.
