My new bronco

Postby GubNi on Sat Dec 06, 2008 7:45 pm

I decided I wanted a cheap 4wd SUV for work this winter. I wanted a first generation 4 runner 85-89 but didn't find one I was happy with. I started thinking I'm a ford guy, so why not look into a bronco II. The 2.9 manual trans 4wd gets 20mpg on the highway. Next step was to find one in decent condition. My biggest concern was one that wasn't abused. I got one for $500 today in Raleigh. Took $100 in fuel to go get it and it doesn't run well. It's unmolested and had had lots of work done. My plans are to make a daily driver out of it until the 2010 bronco comes out.

Original for sale thread

I have a 1986 Ford Bronco II 4x4 for sale. It has 124,945 miles, and I am the third owner. It is a 5-speed manual transmission, with a manual hubs and transfer case. The vehicle has a 2.9 V6 but has run only sparingly since I've owned it...I'm not fully sure what is wrong with it, but since I've bought it I haven't had a place to work on it, I am graduating, and have a job requiring lots of commuting and little time for anything else. I need to sell it and have accepted the huge loss I'm taking.

The following components have been replaced recently:
- Clutch
- Slave cylinder
- IAC valve and rear main seal replaced
- Fuel Pressure Regulator
- High Pressure Fuel Pump
- BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires, 30x9.50 R15 LT, with only 6,000 miles on them (tires
alone are worth a good $500)
- Blower fan motor
- Blower fan resistor
- Ignition coil
- Distributor cap, rotor,
- Spark Plugs
- Spark plug wires
- Liftgate cylinders
- TFI ignition control module
- EGR valve
- EEC and Fuel Pump Relays
- Dash cap
- In-tank fuel pump
- Front bumper
- New Magnaflow Catalytic Converter (under warranty)
- New Muffler and Exhaust Piping
- New James Duff Shocks
- Fuel Injectors all tested and refurbished
- Fuel rail cleaned and refurbished
- Fuel Filter

An extra AC compressor and high pressure fuel pump are included, as well as some extra gaskets, chopped fenders, replacement stone guard, and pair of used engine heads.

The truck’s suspension is great and it handles extremely well. The brakes are solid and braking is strong. The tires look almost brand new and have minimal use on them (road use only). This truck has been repainted once but probably needs a nice sanding and new coat. It has a solid frame with no rust holes or deep pitting. The body on this Bronco II is SOLID, with only a few very mirror places of surface rust and no rust holes in the floor pan at all. The truck's two front fenders are dented but I have two replacement fenders that have been chopped, primed, and ready to bolt on if interested. The driver's seat has a slight tear in it. This truck doesn't leak any oil or fluids.

The vehicle has not been driven with the four wheel drive engaged, but the hubs turn freely and the transfer case shifts nice and smooth. The engine runs but needs more work. It has had a complete tune up, timing set, new fuel filter installed, and rebuilt fuel injectors. The fuel rail was removed, stripped, wire-brushed, and refinished when the rebuilt injectors were installed. Seafoam was run through the engine to clean out carbon build up and it’s been running a thousand times better since when I bought it. Since this is a 2.9L Cologne engine, you can drop an early Explorer 4.0 V6 (91-94) in and bolt right up to the same transmission.

Bottom line: I paid $800 for the vehicle, then added another $700+ into the Bronco II. I'm asking for $800 for the entire thing, all the parts, etc. Feel free to PM with questions, offers, etc. I want to move this thing sooner rather than later.

Last night I charged the battery. Today I ran codes. I got code 24 which was air control temp sensor. I replaced it, cleared codes, and ran them again and no codes. It still ran rough, but a little better. I was told the battery drained from sitting which generally means bad alternator. I took it off and had it checked. It was ok. I removed the fuel filter and reinstalled it properly. I removed the spark plugs, cleaned them, and reinstalled. I loosened the distrubutor and adjusted it. All this makes it run better, but the main problem is still there. It sounds like a miss. I suspect one of the sensors.

Took it to a mechanic tonight. I'm convinced it's a bad sensor, but not sure which one.

Compression test is fine. MAP sensor is ok. We are suspecting a bad temperature sensor.

Found out today that three injectors are not getting power. That means it's probably a bad computer.

Found the problem! Broke wire between the computer and the injector harness. Should be able to pick it up tomorrow.

After patching the wire - problem came back. Double checked the wire and it's good. Got confused on the color codes inside the cab and out. Ordered a computer today. Will try that Friday.
